DIZALICA - Initiative for Reconstruction of Culture and Society is network of organizations, informal groups and individuals with the aim to focus on the appearances of extreme nationalism, xenophobia and populism. Direct reason why DIZALICA is established is reappearance of extreme right in Vojvodina and Novi Sad (extreme right wing party won last local elections in 2004 in Novi Sad and in some municipalities in Vojvodina). DIZALICA pleads for defense of the right on basic freedoms and free speech. It will influence the emergence of political, cultural and social critical awareness. It opens possibilities for constructive dialogue in the city and region. With this in focus, it is widening the area to fight for basic human rights, with emphasis on the importance of inter-cultural and open dialogue and people’s freedom to self organize and act according to their own interests on one side, and collective welfare on the other. Also, it deals with democratization of the decision-making process in different fields, synergy between the non-governmental and governmental bodies in specific actions as major parts of everyday activities inside the initiative. Different forms and models are used in activities of association DIZALICA, from public reactions and actions, media announcements, critique of existing models in social and cultural practices to public debates. All these models are mentioned to be part of open dialogue process with public sector, which has to recognize good intention of this action, with the aim to develop and improve general cultural climate in the city. Last year Dizalica organized several different actions. Some are organized with lots of pre-planning like for example series of public debates about culture policy in Novi Sad raising questions of bureaucratization of cultural life in the city and region. Cultural traditionalism was also discussed, in the sense that it is always source for right wing ideologists, especially in the context of Serbia. Today, culture is the field where nationalist, racist ideologies are raising future followers and that is exactly what is happening right now in Serbia. Since there was no appropriate denacification of Serbian society, new young generations raised under the Milosevic reign are on the way to repeat the same mistakes from nineties. There is symbolical battle in Serbian society in the field of culture and education and lots of effort is needed to pacify public atmosphere. Some actions of Dizalica are carried out almost simultaneously as a reaction, for example when candidate from extreme right-winged party won the last elections in Novi Sad in November 2004 and Dizalica organized public blindfolding of several historical monuments that represented persons who were important in the period of enlightenment, science or were fighters for political freedom. Also, at the same time after the elections, some organizations that are part of Dizalica, organized action of postering of Novi Sad with thousands of black posters as certain remainder, to voters and especially to those that didn’t vote, of the period in the nineties when strongest Serbian rightwing - Radical Party - had major role in local government. |
