Fascist Attacks at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia
  franziska  11/15/2005 - 15:07

Antifascistic Action Novi Sad organized two events on 9th November: public debate at the Philosophy Faculty (well known by right wing debates and right wing student) with moderator and two guests: Prof.Milenko Perovic, chief of Philosophy department at the same faculty, and Vladimir Markovic, sociologist from Belgrade. Both of them are known as people who are doing research on historical and contemporary aspects of fascism, among other things.

After the debate a concert was planed in the place just across Faculty building with 4 antifa punk bands from Novi Sad. We reported events to the police, but the same day, because University has its own autonomy and it's up to the dean should it be reported and announced to the police or not. With the concert club the same - they are having concerts every week and police knows that.

15 min after the beginning of debate (around 8 pm), around 20 fascists entered the room, blocking the entrance/exit. They immediately slapped few times a member of the Antifacistic Action Novi Sad. Few minutes after that, they started to insult professor Perovic, calling him communist, ustasa and Montenegro separatists, as well as the other organizers and the audience. They made a lots of insults and one of them, the leader, hit the cameraman few times. In the next two days, 15 fascists have been arrested and they are in 30 days imprisoned. (Some of the arrested fascists are students of History at the same faculty). During that time, official charge with felony on arousing national, race and religious intolerance. The penalty for this is from 1 to 7 years of imprisonment.

Also, today, 11/15/50, Province parliament is in session and discussing about bringing the law which will forbid existence of fascistic and nazi groups, nazi emblems, possession of fascistic books, pamphlets, etc.. It is very likely that they are going to bring the law, which will then be passed to the Republic Parliament on voting.

The media made some confusion in some cases, mostly making reports based on sensationalism. Interesting is that we made a lots of media appearances. Some of us is speaking on 11/16/05 at the national television!

These days another thing is happening in the Subotica, city on the north of Vojvodina near Hungarian border, where Hungarian Honveds' veterans are gathering, and trying to erase/cancel "fascistic" prefix that inevitably goes with their past.
