MI2 - Multimedia Institut in Zagreb

In 2000 mi2 opened its public space, net.culture center mama, which has quickly become a meeting spot for young people in Zagreb, with cheap internet access, a lounge space with DJs constantly performing, presentation and screening space, and a media library.

Serving no liquor, having no corporate beverage policies, open from 12am 'til 12pm and often much later through the night, mama has created a unique environment for meeting with hackers, philosophers, artists, DJs and activists. mi2 also houses a media lab, provides net services and infrastructural support to other NGOs in the area, and publishes texts and newsletters.

One of the constituting ideas behind mi2 is to connect the media culture scene around organizations like V2 or events like N5M- with the equivalent scene that exists in Croatia: activism at the level of 'autonomous culture', rather than specifically media or new technology culture. For some, mi2 is a production space, for others it's a service, an art project, a technical resource, and a place for public programs; in effect it is a place composed of many different goals and backgrounds.

The space of the net.culture club 'mama', for example, is used as a public platform for presenting wide contemporary artistic, social, political, organizational, and leftfield technological experiments. 'This might be anything from GNU evangelism and obscure electronic music,' explains Zelijko Blace, one of mi2's co-ordinators, 'to net streaming events or a summer camp in the ex-military base on Adriatic island of Vis. Annually we organize a computer arts exhibition, and this year we initiated a new public event called "New Media Culture Week."'

In addition to such activities, mi2 also tries to bridge the gaps and fill the holes which are left out by state institutions - by presenting international new media art, providing net services to NGOs, publishing texts and 'invading' other media with 'tactical' issues. Programs range from screening of Anime film to fine art movies and video-art, from HTML / Flash workshops to LastTuesday meetings. A Queer culture/arts series has also been initiated, and the recently opened media lab is focussing on more on production and research & development.

Recently mi2 established an 11MB intranet for 4 different clubs and the media lab, an infrastructure on which can be built, for example, TV and radio production. For many at mi2/mama, the focus is on getting people to use this kind of infrastructure for their own projects, on building a physical and social network around 'mama', rather than establishing a passive 'audience' for its activities.
