How does D-A-S-H protect itself against hostile attacks and other operating troubles?

All data on the D-A-S-H server is regularly backuped. Apart from that the servers are protected by firewalls. Nevertheless we recommend all users to save important data themselves in order to guarantee maximum possible protection against the loss of data.

Does D-A-S-H compete with other non commercial internet platforms and services?

Not at all! Quite the reverse is true! D-A-S-H is interested in encouraging groups and initiatives to get as many projects off the ground as possible. Where problems arise and where more know-how and resources are needed than available to the groups and because co-operation can often save a lot of time, D-A-S-H provides services, which cannot be offered easily by people volunteering their time and energies. With regular webmaster conferences and workshops on a European level D-A-S-H offers opportunities for an interchange of experience and for technological, practical and content co-operation between the numerous non commercial server providers, webmasters and politically involved programmers and system administrators.

Which operating systems are used by D-A-S-H?

D-A-S-H servers run on the current FreBSD versions, i.e. on the unix system, which is distributed under an open source licence by he University of Berkeley. That system is continually improved by a large, world wide community of developers and is generally supposed to be the safest and quickest system available for servers. We normally install linux on the computers used in our trainings and workshops. In order to check the interoperability of konfiguraions with proprietary standards, we also use a few MS Windows computer.

What will happen to my data, in case that D-A-S-H has to stop operating?

We act on the assumption that, even if D-A-S-H has to be stopped for whatever reasons, the data will stay available. After all, in co-operation with the users of D-A-S-H, we want to build up a reliable and lasting server environment which is free from the uncertainties of the commercially orientated milieu.
